Twin Cities Billboard Artist Bob Johnson Dies

eb5508cowsStarTribune reports the death of billboard artist Bob Johnson.

Johnson was a commercial artist and contractor for Naegele Outdoor Advertising.  His most famous work was a billboard for Ewald Dairy which featured two 3-D cows measuring 10 feet from muzzle to head with horns stretching 12 feet from tip to tip.

The billboard promoted milk produced by Ewald Bros Dairy and was constructed across from the Ewald Bros plant in 1954.

Ewald Bros produced its last bottle of milk in 1982 and the billboard was moved to the Minnesota State Fair where it sits at the edge of the swine barn.  Bill Ewald is leading an effort to raise $25,000 to renovate and move the sign.

Insider’s take: Before Atomic Props there was Bob Johnson.  Insider would love to hear from any of you who’ve seen the Ewald Bros billboard up close.
