Tweaking Competitors

Billboards are a great way to tweak the opposition. Billboard Insider reader Richard Kennedy of Kennedy Outdoor writes:

I thought that this was a brilliant billboard campaign for Wendys.  We just installed this artwork on a big 20×60 billboard that sits directly above McDonald’s that reads, “Don’t make a McStake”.  The board directly below this one is a close up shot of Wendy staring at you as you are sitting in the McDonalds drive thru.   (See attached photos).  The billboards have been amplified on Tik Tok and social media.

Billboard Insider’s take:  Billboards adjacent to a restaurant are a great selling opportunity.  If the restaurant doesn’t take the billboards you can market them to a competitor.  As Lamar’s Cynthia Barbour says in the comments section below: “McDonalds most likely passed on the opportunity.  Wendy’s saw the value.”

  1. Man that is awesome Richard! You are brilliant! I think I’ll take this article on a few sales calls.

  2. Cynthia Barbour

Perfect example of The Art Of War – “Ground giving advantage to whichever side is in possession, is called ground of contention”. McDonalds most likely passed on the opportunity? Wendy’s obviously saw the value.

    Fantastic idea. LOL!

  4. Hey, thanks guys!
I wish that I could take credit for this but I believe that someone from Wendy’s put this campaign together for Scott Outdoor here in Ohio. We just did the install for them. Ohio Outdoor also helped with the install as well. But I agree…brilliant marketing!:)
