It’s fitting that we close out a week in which we published Billboard Insider’s 2024 list of OOH contractors with an interview with Tony Cross, a self-employed vinyl installer in Glasgow, Scotland.
Tony, tell us about yourself.
Well my name is Anthony Peter Cross, but I always get called Tony. APC Outdoor Advertising is my trading name.
How did you get into the out of home business?
I got into the business at 15 years old full time as an employee, through my brother who is also in outdoor advertising. I am self employed now and have been for the past 15 years.
What’s your job like?
I work mostly on paper and paste billboards, but also can do backlights(banners) , skins (banners in train stations), 4 sheets small sizes, 6 sheets small sizes and street telephone kiosks too.
Had any close calls doing an install?
I’ve never fallen off the ladder in my life, but I have walked off the edge of a platform once and went straight down into a bunch of trees and bushes at about 15 feet. But luckily I fell with a big bit of stripping off the billboard and that covered me from any serious damage.
What’s the thing that you like most about the job?
The thing that I like most about my job is the flexibility I can work around anything that I need to. Being self employed, the flexibility is the best part for sure as I have other projects on the go also.
Here’s a sequence of Tony completing an install. Great job Tony!
