Tennessee House Finance committees approve law fix

House Transportation Committee Chairman Don Howell testifying in support of HB 2255 to change Tennessee’s sign rules.

House bill 2255, a proposed fix to Tennessee’s state sign law, unanimously passed a House Finance Subcommittee and the House Finance Ways and Means Committee and goes to House Rules Committee.  Two key changes were made to the bill.

  • The penalty for an illegal billboard under the State’s sign law was increased from $100/day to $500/day.
  • The bill gives the TNDOT the authority to promulgate emergency rules in the event that Tennessee gets a letter from the Federal Government saying that Tennessee’s federal transportation money may be withheld.

In recommending approval, House Transportation Committee Chairman Don Howell said, “this legislation is modeled after the state of TX…this is a good hybrid bill, part of the bill is from TNDOT, part of the bill is from industry.”
