Coastal Point reveals that the Sussex County Council introduced a new ordinance to revise the Deleware County’s sign regulations. The County has had a billboard moratorium since September 2015 while the Council reviewed the sign code. Here are some of the key changes:
- Construction permit fees will be increased from 50 cents per square foot to 65 cents per square foot. The money raised from fees will fund an additional employee to enforce sign regulations. This works out to a permit cost of $437 for a 14 by 48 sign, up from $336 under the current rules.
- The front yard setback for off-premises signs will be increased from 25 feet to 40 feet.
- Off-premises signs must be 500 feet from dwellings, churches, schools or public lands versus a current 300 feet.
- Off-premises signs must be 1000 feet from other off-premise signs versus a current 300 feet.
The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a hearing on the sign ordinance on May 12 and the County Council will consider the issue on My 24.
