Stokely Outdoor Growing

Insider received a press release from Stokely Outdoor announcing 36 new billboards which have 144 faces across Oklahoma.  Insider talked with Sam Stokely about the company’s growth.

Did your growth come via new build and/or acquisitions?

These are all new builds signs. Solid steel structures with hurricane frames for faces double stacks and we put brand new LED lights on our signs that burn all night long. Each one of these new signs was leased, permitted and built by me just a single owner operator. Over the past two years I’ve worked hard to find key locations that make sense and customers need coverage in those areas. All the new signs were on major arteries leading into our out of key towns in Oklahoma.

Why did you decide to the run the press release?

With the new year we are trying to create a better digital online presence.  Just entered the digital age with a new web sight and maps along with spread sheets for each location.

Did your marketing include a website update?

Our website has been a good source for lead generation.  Especially for out of state buyers.  New maps approach photos and blogs keep our website in front page search for my area.

Your internal growth over the past few years has been impressive.

We started off as a small operator maybe five new signs a year. Then we got to 10 signs a year, and now it is maybe one a month. Just last year we completed 20 in a year and I hope to shoot for maybe 30 this year.  This will bring us up to 500 faces total and five digitals so far.

Insider understands you have an interesting hobby.  Tell us about your oil company signs?

Being a Sign Guy we’ve always collected signs. After running out a room at the main office we started putting new signs up at our second location have currently got 60 original sign poles frames and porcelain faces of most of the oil companies operating in our area back between the 30s 40s snd 50s.    The fun thing about collecting the signs gives me something to look at every day at the window.  It’s crazy to think they had all those different brands and companies and most of them were gobbled up through consolidation and corporate companies and mergers.   You could say the same as taking place in the billboard industry with giants like Lamar, Clear Channel Outdoor and Outfront gobbling up a lot of the smaller guys like to me.

  1. You have mis-spelled his company name in the title and in the article body: “STOKELY” is the correct spelling.

There is also a 404 from the original article link that was pointed here: https://billboardinsider.com/marketing-a-growing-outdoor-company-a-conversation-with-sam-stokely
