Steve Crayne on Designing a Great Out of Home Website

Steve Crayne designed website for Mashburn Outdoor

Next week Billboard Insider will release updated out of home website rankings.  Today Starting Gate Marketing’s Steve Crayne talks about how to design an effective out of home company website.

Steve Crayne, Starting Gate Marketing

How did you get involved in designing out of home company websites?

I was introduced to the OOH industry by Patti Reeves of Reeves Media and Larry Roberts of Boardworks Outdoor Advertising, two pioneers in the outdoor advertising industry in Atlanta. I first started designing OOH websites serving as a project manager for redesigns of both their websites and then found there was a real need for smaller OOH companies to have websites at a fraction of the cost of WordPress based websites.

What mistakes do out of home companies sometimes make when they put up a website?

In many ways, a website is like a billboard, quickly grab the customers attention, communicate your product or service and get them to call. So, the biggest mistake I see is many sites don’t follow these same principals and are over complicated and difficult to navigate.

I also see neglect in SEO (Search Engine Optimization). For instance, a big mistake I see is not setting up and / or not updating their Google My Business listing, which is a key component of SEO and being found in local search results. I employ a 32-point SEO checklist on all my websites which is critical for smaller OOH companies who are competing with the big companies that have dedicated SEO and social media teams.

What out of home company websites have you designed.

My three most recent projects are:

Azalea Outdoor

Mashburn Outdoor

Eastern Outdoor Advertising
