Something To Keep An Eye On

Though this is not in the US, Billboard Insider noted this article which was published in The Netherlands. Starting January 1 in The Hague, Netherlands, a new local ordinance will come into effect, prohibiting the advertising of high-emission products, particularly those using fossil fuels.  The Dutch city looks to make history as the first in the world to ban advertisements for cars with combustion engines.

The city aims to show its direction towards renewable energy sources and its commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2030. The local council made the decision after several years of debate. This ban not only covers cars but also other products and services related to fossil fuels, such as air and marine transport, and petroleum products in general.

According to the new rules, all ads for products and services with a high carbon footprint will have to disappear from public spaces. Car manufacturers can still advertise their products but only if they are not combustion engine vehicles. The measure primarily applies to outdoor advertising—on billboards, city posters or screens, or at public transport stops.

Insiders Take: We will admit that it seems far fetched that this idea could migrate to other cities in Europe or to the US.  But….. if I were a California based operator, I might keep an eye on this one.

  1. This suffocating COMMUNISM continues to creep up on us. It won’t be long until the government will start classifying certain billboards ads as “misinformation”. This will inevitably start to dismantle an industry that still uses one of the few remaining tools for “free speech” here in America….billboards.
    Great article. Thanks Dave!
