SignBird Tuesday Tip – What’s the Difference Between a Good and Bad Photo?

Selling your ad space requires having photos of your billboards. Whether it’s for your website, social media, or your ride sheets, you need a picture of that board! However, bad photos could be detrimental to your business. Here’s some information on the differences between a good and a bad photograph. 

Good photography has been proven to make a difference, take for example this Airbnb case study showing the differences between amateur and professional photography when it comes to listing units on their website. “Researchers found that having high-quality professional photography increased yearly revenue by an average of $2,455 per unit for Airbnb properties! That makes a huge difference! Think about how professional photos could improve your bottom line.” 1

Here we have two photos taken by an amateur photographer. The one on the right is crooked, the ad copy is illegible and there’s a distracting speed limit sign right in front of it. The one on the left is very obviously taken from a car window, note the reflection in the lower right-hand corner. The billboard is off and there is no traffic to be seen. In comparison, these are two photos SignBird has taken! On the right we see lots of traffic, a legible ad copy, and a clear sky. The main focus of the photograph is very obviously the billboard. On the left, we see a drone photo of the billboard with no other distractions, just billboard and traffic – the most important things! You can easily read the ad copy and there are no trees in the way. 

It’s not just editing! Getting a professional camera and drone goes a long way – as well as hiring a photographer and drone pilot that has experience. Once you’ve got high-quality photos, time to make that billboard shine! One of the most important things you can do to help your billboard stand out in a photograph is to follow the rule of thirds. This states that placing your subject – the billboard – in the left or right third of the image helps to draw the eye and leads to a more compelling image.
