How did RMG get into the out of home business?
RMG Outdoor, Inc. started in 1989, with the same three founding partners is has today! It started as Renaissance Media Group, which rebranded in the 2000’s to RMG OUTDOOR Inc. We are the longest running billboard sign supply company in the industry today. Quality Billboards , our sister company has provided quality MDO and Metal face panels to the advertising industry for over 30 years.
What trends are you seeing in new structures?
Currently we are seeing a lot of existing signs that clients want to upgrade to hold digital screens. Also, safety has always been an important trend over the years, but seems to always be front and center. Customers are getting more and more particular about ladder placements, handrails, and easy access to digital components. A great tool is our interactive 3D model we utilize and share with our customers prior to fabrication. Customers can provide feedback or make changes to our models as we move toward fabrication. These models help eliminate mistakes in the fabrication process. Lastly, we are seeing a huge trend in decorative column covers, which we are now providing in some cases as part of our fab package.
What sort of wind loads are clients building to?
As you could probably guess wind loads are based on the location of the sign in a particular city or county. Fortunately, we have our own in house engineering team with the ability to stamp drawing and calculations in all lower 48 states. Engineering is part of our service package, from original design to handling all the comments from plan checkers and sign off letters. We normally can turn around stamped plans in less than two weeks.
What’s an interesting or challenging build that you’ve done?
RMG has built thousands of signs in its 35 year history. From massive extended flags to exotic builds cutting thru rooflines, to art deco style builds as well. A recent one was for OFM in Bridgeport, CT. The challenges were to interface structural integrity to aesthetics all while keeping in mind what the client wanted the final product to look like since it was a high profile location. We also had to deal with a large spread footing on an unstable location, and had constraints and size limitations in an active, traveled yard with truck traffic.

I started as General Manager of Productivity Corporation in 1986, when we started building signs. The name was changed (rebranded) in Jan. 1994 to Productivity Fabricators when I bought the company. I believe this makes us a little older than RMG.
I have bought structures from Bob Myer starting all the way back in the nineties when I was with Whiteco in Florida and again with my company Freedom Media here in the Panhandle. RMG has always delivered the highest quality structures and Bob is a absolute joy to deal with.
Great design and attention to detail. Enjoyed erecting this Bridgeport structure from concept to completion!
