Sign Companies Speak Against Proposed Sussex Ordinance

“It’s disheartening. It’s hard to believe that a bunch of Republicans want more regulations and more government,” said working group member Lynn Rogers, a former councilman and owner of Rogers Sign Co. in Milton. “We don’t want to become the most over-regulated business in Sussex County.”

sussex county logoCape Gazette reports that Billboard companies spoke out against a proposed Sussex County draft ordinance at a May 24th public hearing.   The sign companies are upset with the following:

  • Sussex County did not take a Council appointed working group’s recommendations into account when designing the proposed billboard law.
  • The proposed law prohibits all variances from the sign code.
  • The proposed law 1,000 foot setback would make 80% of billboards along Route 1 non-conforming.
  • The proposed law prohibits electronic signs.

Insider’s take: Kudos to Clear Channel Outdoor and the local sign companies for being willing to speak out and to present their own sign code.
