Selling OOH Advertising in a Competitive Market

Jonathan Graviss

In the world of advertising, brands battle for consumer attention across a myriad of mediums and the competition is fierce. From digital platforms to traditional print media, audio, and video, every channel vies for a slice of the advertising pie. How many advertising sales reps are currently working in your market?  Let’s focus on traditional media for a minute.  To the best of my knowledge, in Atlanta, there are 51 radio stations, 22 TV stations, 21 print publications, and 4 primary billboard companies.  If we assumed 2 sales reps per outlet that’s almost 200 media reps in the market and that’s very conservative.  OOH advertising stands out as a particularly competitive arena, where success demands a unique blend of strategy, innovation, and agility.

In this discussion, we delve into the intricacies of selling OOH advertising in a fiercely competitive market.  We will explore the essential elements that help drive sales success.

In the realm of OOH advertising, where the streets serve as our canvas for captivating brand messages, success hinges on a delicate balance of strategy, teamwork, client relationships, and a relentless sense of urgency. Here’s how to navigate and thrive in a competitive landscape:

  1. Forge the Right Team: Success in OOH requires more than just individual expertise. It demands a cohesive team that not only thrives in the competitive streetscape but also collaborates effectively internally. Each team member should bring their unique skills and perspectives to the table, fostering synergy and collective momentum towards achieving common objectives. It’s competitive enough on the streets that you want a cohesive and stable team that works well together and leaves the competitiveness to the streets.
  2. Selling OOH advertising demands a team that not only comprehends the nuances of street-level competition but also synergizes seamlessly internally. Each member should be a master in their domain, whether it’s understanding local demographics, negotiating prime locations, or crafting compelling ad campaigns. Collaboration and communication are paramount to ensure everyone is aligned towards the common goal of driving sales and exceeding targets.
  3. Cultivate Strong Client Relationships: In a market teeming with options, building enduring relationships with clients and prospects is non-negotiable. Take the time to understand their unique needs, aspirations, and pain points. By becoming a trusted advisor rather than just a vendor, you can position yourself as the go-to partner for their advertising endeavors. Regular communication, delivering on promises, and going the extra mile will solidify your reputation and foster long-term loyalty.
  4. Define Your Unique Value Proposition: To stand out amidst the competition, you must clearly articulate what sets your company apart. Whether it’s unrivaled access to premium locations, innovative ad formats, or unparalleled customer service, identify your unique selling points and leverage them to sway potential clients in your favor. A deep understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, coupled with a keen awareness of market trends, will enable you to craft compelling pitches that resonate with your target audience.
  5. Operate with Urgency: In a fast-paced industry where every moment counts, operating with a sense of urgency can be the difference between seizing opportunities and watching them slip away. Whether it’s responding promptly to client inquiries, swiftly adapting to market fluctuations, or executing campaigns with precision and speed, maintaining momentum is essential for staying ahead of the curve. Embrace agility, stay nimble, and constantly strive for excellence in all facets of your operations.

In conclusion, selling OOH advertising in a competitive market requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses a talented team, nurturing client relationships, a clear value proposition, and a relentless drive to act with urgency. By mastering these pillars, you can not only navigate the challenges of the advertising landscape but also emerge as a dominant force, driving growth and success for your organization.
