Public Transit Ridership Growing but Down 41% from Pre-pandemic

It’s good news and bad news for public transit ridership.  Ridership has grown 41% over the past year but is still down 41% from pre-pandemic according the the APTA public transit ridership dashboard.  Here’s US public transit weekly ridership for the past 3 years.

 

Here’s the APTA data by transit sector for the first half of 2022 versus the first half of 2021.

And here’s the data by transit sectors for the first half of 2022 versus the first half of 2019 (pre-pandemic).  Bus ridership and demand response are down the least.  Rail is down the most.

Billboard Insider’s Take:  Not great news if you run a transit or rail out of home plant.  Transit ridership is still impacted by covid while driving traffic is higher than ever.  Maybe work from home is impacting transit commutes.  Transit systems were also late in removing mask mandates.
