Regulations can have unintentional consequences. The Montana Department of Transportation has proposed a rule prohibiting outdoor advertising on the outside of transit shelters within the state right of way. The Daily Interlake reports that Chandler Communications may remove the shelters if it can’t run advertising on the shelter’s exterior. Chandler has 22 bus shelters in Flathead County, including 16 in the right of way. Chandler purchased and maintains the shelters at no cost to county taxpayers and uses advertising to defray the $40,000 in annual costs. The Montana transportation commission meets May 26 to consider changes to the proposed rule.
