Planners Use Billboards to Keep Community Clean

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Tahoe Fund, and the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority bought digital billboard space to fight litter.

One billboard message displays the hashtag #NoSledLeftBehind (to encourage locals and visitors to keep trails clean). Another billboard promotes picking up after dogs (“Be #1 at picking up #2).

“When we see discarded sled pieces and cigarette butts littering the snow and trails, it tells that we need to do a better job educating the public on how to enjoy Tahoe responsibly,” Joanne Marchetta of the planning agency told the local newspaper.

Nevada’s Division of Transportation recently picked up nearly 2,000 pounds of broken sleds and debris at Spooner Summit, an entrance to Lake Tahoe.

Insider’s take:  this current example reminds us that our medium is part of the solution. Like the anti-litter campaign at Lake Tahoe, other examples – old and new — include:

Don’t text and drive (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)

Seat belts (National Highway Traffic Safety Commission)

Sober driving (US-DOT)

  1. Always interesting when a community that prohibits all forms of outdoor uses outdoor.
