Newton, KS drafts sign code update.

The Kansan reports that Newton, KS has drafted a new sign code.  The new code will bring the town’s ordinance in compliance with Reed v Gilbert.  Key elements include:

  • Message neutrality for regulations.
  • A new fee of $1.50 per square foot for permanent signs.
  • Digital signage will be permitted with brightness and minimum flip restrictions.

The planning commissions will review the code on Jan 9

Insider’s take:  A permit application fee of $1.50 per square seems pretty high.  That’s $2,016 for a two sided static billboard.
