The Mount Airy News reports that Mt Airy has scheduled a hearing June 16 to solicit input on proposed billboard restrictions. The city has proposed a new sign code which will include:
- A 1,000 foot distance between billboards.
- A 500 foot setback from residences.
- A maximum billboard height of 30 feet.
- A prohibition on double-stacked or side-by-side signs.
- A restriction on large signs to commercial areas only US 52 bypass, US 60`1 (southwest from US 52 and NC 89 (west of US 52).
- LED billboards are prohibited.
- Non-conforming billboards which do not comply with height or area requirements and must be removed within 7 years.
- The regulations also make changes in the sign code to conform to Reed v Gilbert.
Jim Troy of Toby Outdoor has asked to speak at the June 16 meeting.
