After 10 years of proposals and public hearings, Montana may be ready to allow digital billboards on state highways according to reports in Missoulian, Montana Standard and the Helena Independent Record. The Montana Transportation Commission is considering allowing non-animated digital boards and the outdoor community is optimistic of passage due to a collaborative effort with the Commission and the Montana Department of Transportation.
Currently digital signs are prohibited along highways and interstates in Montana. The new rule would allow for signs within a commercial or industrial zone in city limits or urban areas of incorporated and unincorporated cities. The proposed revision has been a year in developing with Lamar, Premiere Outdoor, Bella Outdoor and Yesco participating in the process.
The new regulations would allow for the modification of existing sings if they meet zoning requirements.
