Mike Hershey on an Update to a Pause on Political Advertising

On Sunday, after the shooting incident in Pennsylvania, Mike Hershey, OAAA EVP, Government Affairs sent a note out mentioning an announcement to pause political advertising, referencing the following article in The Hill.

Since Sunday was a very hectic day and moment in history, Insider touched based with Mike to see if there was more clarity on political advertising.

OAAA EVP Michael Hershey

Mike, has the effort to pause political advertising gathered momentum during the week?

To restate our purpose in sending the member communication – we wanted to (1) inform companies of the Biden campaign announcement; and (2) encourage them to engage political ad clients.

By engaging clients, we felt they could come to an understanding of how the announcement was going to be implemented across advertising platforms and to see if other clients intended to do the same.

An example that immediately came to mind was the Democratic National Committee billboard ad buy scheduled to run in and around Milwaukee this week during the Republican National Convention. Some of the ad copy was pointed.

The feedback we’ve gotten so far has been mainly one of appreciation for the head’s up; some initial feedback on client engagement, which has been constructive; and an organic reaction and desire by member companies to convey their own message.

What have you heard from OAAA member companies?

An example, just received from Link Media, is below. Link wanted to use the power of our medium to convey a positive message. They are running this in their markets:
