Meadow Outdoor Hits #1 Small Business in Oregon

It is not unusual to see Meadow Outdoor on the list of the 100 Best Companies to work for in Oregon.  After years of being included on the annual list, this year they were named the best small company to work for in Oregon! Want to know how a company can be consistently ranked as a top business, Insider provides you with two terrific examples.

Chris Zukin

First is this article 101 Mistakes Billboard Companies Make. Insider printed in 2024. Here are Chris Zukins’, General Manager of Meadow Outdoor, comments on this article.

This started a few months ago during a Vision and Strategy meeting.  We are talking about the things we are doing well, and those things that will help us to continue to grow. Our Controller said: “What about the bad things that billboard companies can do?”.  Wow, great idea. So, the 8 of us in that meeting all wrote down the mistakes that Meadow has made and that we have seen other billboard companies make.  I started compiling those specific items into a list, and decided to document 101 mistakes, errors, omissions, and poor habits into this list.  I then sent the draft list to every employee at Meadow and got several excellent contributions.  This compilation is a group effort of the employees at Meadow Outdoor whose 40 employees have a combined total of over 650 years of Outdoor Advertising experience.

Second, a reprint of Chris’ comments from last year, when Meadow Outdoor finished as runner up in the Best Companies ranking.

Congratulations, again. How many times has Meadow Outdoor been ranked in the top 10 in the Oregon Business Small Business rankings?

We have participated five times, and placed 10th or higher four of those five times, of those four times we were in the top five a total of 3 times.

What are the core elements that you think make Meadow Outdoor such a terrific place to work?

We are unique in that we believe in empowering our employees through a culture of ownership thinking. In addition, we are a family business and try to treat our employees as family. We maintain a family-like and respectful working environment, and share the success of the company with our employees.

To consistently be ranked so highly has to include intentionality from ownership and key management.  What are the core elements that you think make Meadow Outdoor such a terrific place to work?

Providing flexibility to our employees. Sharing the success of the company with the employees through profit sharing and performance bonuses. And finally allowing giving our employees autonomy to do their jobs. No micro-managing.
