Matt Schulze on Converting a Structure from Static to Digital

Matt Schulze

A reader asks “how much will it cost to convert an existing steel monopole two sided 14 x 48 static billboard to digital?”  Billboard Insider asked Selective Structures Matt Schulze to comment and he said this:

I’ve seen the costs to convert vary from $5,000 to $50,000.  It depends.  Is it a center mount or a flag?  What code was it built under?  Are you going to have to update the sign to the new building code when you convert?  That’s extra cost.  Does the ordinance even allow you to upgrade the sign?  Most places won’t.

Every new center mount billboard structure in  the US needs to be built digital ready .  It doesn’t cost that much more.  You simply need to upsize the foundation, the torsion bar and the upright.  You build for some additional weight.  Usually  it’s in a range of  $500-$2000 for a center mount.
