Lamar’s National Alliance Creates Training Partnership with OSHA

Chuck Wigger, who is a Vice President for Safety/Risk Management at Lamar Advertising contacted us about a recent training session they just completed for OSHA personnel in Little Rock, Arkansas.  Being ever curious, we reached out to Chuck for some details on the OSHA training.

Chuck Wigger, Lamar Advertising VP

Chuck, tell us about your training relationship with OSHA?

Lamar has a National Alliance with OSHA and through that Alliance we have conducted training sessions with OSHA staff in different parts of the country focusing on hazards within our industry. Because we are such a small industry, this education helps OSHA understand how we perform our work and how our work may not always fit within construction or general industry standards.

The training consists of a few hours in the classroom followed by fieldwork. This week, we worked with Arkansas OSHA in the Little Rock office.

Is this National Alliance a formalized agreement with OSHA?

Yes, the agreement is a formal one. I have attached a link to our Alliance page and one to Alliances in general.

Is Lamar compensated by OSHA for the training you provide?

No compensation takes place. This is a cooperative program where both parties work together to make safer workplaces.

Do you have a Risk Management Team that travels and meets with OSHA personnel for their training?

Formally no. As these opportunities come up, usually it is myself, our Area Field Manager, and our local GM and Ops Manager.  This past week, we worked with Arkansas OSHA in the Little Rock office. Attached is a photo with our team and the OSHA folks after watching a poster and a bulletin install. Pictured from Lamar are Tom Gibbens, Territory Manager for Lamar, Jay Mirolo, Area Field Manager for Lamar, Jason Graham, Operations Manager for Lamar, and myself. Also present were three members of our fabulous operations crew, Matthew Ellis, Donnie Scott, and Paxton Pace.

Are you aware of any other OOH companies who do a similar training?

I am not aware of any other outdoor companies that have an Alliance with OSHA. Lamar took a little bit of a different approach by engaging with the regulators to educate them about our business and we welcome any insight they may offer to keep our employees safe.
