JCDecaux and Sustainability

On this week’s OAAA lunch break on sustainability after covid-19 Adams Outdoor CEO Kevin Gleason commented “It’s inspiring to see what JCDecaux is doing as it relates to taking responsibility for making the world a better place…”    Here are some of the things which JCDecaux Chief Sustainability Officer Carole Brozyna-Diagne talked about.

Using Design to reduce energy pollution and promote public health

JCDecaux has developed a street furniture design to reduce air pollution using a layer of moss above the air intake on the roof of bus shelters.

JCDecaux has installed sanitizer dispensers on bus shelters in Paris and Los Angeles response to the covid crisis.  JC Decaux designed the dispenser within 5 weeks.  The dispensers were first installed in Paris on May 11.  They are at 1,500 bus shelters and 435 toilets.  The company has also installed 300 hand sanitizers connected to bus shelters in Los Angeles.

The company tries to develop street furniture products with a 30 year life.  They design street furniture so that as many parts as possible can be reused.

The company has reduced lighting consumption by up to 70% at bus shelters by using LED’s and smart lighting (e.g. motion detectors, lighting on demand, dynamic brightness modulation).

Recycling

71% of the company’s paper posters recycled in 2019.  76% of PVC canvas was recycled in 2019.   The company  encourages screen suppliers to recycle LED screens at the end of their lives.

The company reduces water consumption by dry cleaning street furniture when possible and by using collected rainwater to clear furniture and vehicles.

Goodvertising

Brozna-Diagne says “goodvertising” is using the company’s massive ad network to share positive content and promote transformation.  Examples of this include messages for encouragement of first responders, telling people to stay home in the covid crisis and using the company’s network to promote ngo’s

Brand Urbanism

JCDecaux is encouraging clients to pursue “brand urbanism” in which companies allocate a portion of their budget to deliver a new and impactful service to the community.  Dominos paving for pizza campaign.  Dominos created a website in which people could nominate potholes in their town for repair.  Dominos provides funding to fill the pothole.
