Inspiring Words From Terry Steen

Funeral services were held May 12 for Philadelphia billboard legend Terry Steen (1941-2017).  His two-word motivational plea is displayed on memorial bulletins:  “Try Harder.”

A decade ago, Steen was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.  He pushed himself to remain physically active and mentally engaged, often exercising for hours a day and continuing to go to the office until it became impossible.

After two back surgeries, Steen said, “I just need to try harder.”  He ordered custom Try Harder pins, giving them to friends, family, and strangers.

Those who eulogized Steen reflected on the power of his plea, which inspired friends and family in different ways.
“Try Harder is inspirational in many ways . . . trying to be a better person or working toward personal goals,” said Steen’s son in-law Steven Gorlechen, president of Steen Outdoor Advertising.  “And, it makes a nice billboard.”
