Inrix reported that for the week of March 21-27 travel volumes were 40% below normal, a decline from the previous week in which travel volumes were 30% below normal. Commercial trucking and fleet trucking are down by 5-10%. Here’s the Chart.
Urban areas are seeing a 60% decline in travel volumes. Rural areas are seeing a 10-30% decline in travel volumes. Here’s a table showing the decline in traffic volumes for the 10 largest states.
The Inrix database measures 100 million trips per day based on cell phone data. That’s about 9% of all the trips which are taken in the US every day. Inrix updates the traffic figures every Monday based on the results for the previous week.
Insider’s take: Expect traffic volumes to keep declining as social distancing is enforced. But don’t be shy about informing clients and prospects that 60% of people and almost all commercial truckers are still driving.
