Indiana Senate Committee OK’s Marijuana Billboard Ad Ban

The Indiana Capital Chronicle reports that the Indiana Senate Transportation Committee approved an amendment to HB 1390 to ban outdoor advertising for marijuana.  Recreational marijuana is illegal in Indiana.  The bill’s sponsor complained at a hearing “and we have trucks, mobile billboards, that drive around and sit in front of our parks.  That’s unacceptable, and it sends a mixed message to the consumer that this product is legal in Indiana…”

Billboard Insider’s take: “Excess is not your friend.”  That’s what Ken Klein, the EVP government affairs for the OAAA used to say about marijuana advertising.  The industry needs to show restraint as to where and when marijuana advertising appears in order to avoid a regulatory or legislative response.  Marijuana advertising does not belong around parks or schools or other places where kids congregate.
