In Memory – Fredrick “Charlie” Farrar

Fredrick Charles “Charlie” Farrar, 80, passed away Jan. 22,2021 after a long battle with Dementia. Based in Rapid City, South Dakota, Charlie owned and operated Farrar Outdoor Advertising from 1983 to 1999, when then business was sold to Lamar Advertising.

Insider did not know Mr. Farrar personally, but our history is important, so we reached out to Brendan Casey of Epic Outdoor who had known Charlie for 25 years. He was kind enough to connect us with the Farrar family.

Eric Farrar, Charlie’s nephew shared with us:

“It was my father Tom and grandfather Fred that got Chuck into the billboard business back when I was in high school and just getting my feet wet (our family had purchased Rosenbaum’s Signs and Outdoor Advertising, Inc. back in the late 70s and this is where the Farrar’s were first introduced into the sign business).”

Insider learned that after college Charlie worked more than 20 years in the insurance industry, mostly for St. Paul Insurance Company in Chicago and then in Springfield, MA.  Chuck’s brother Tom was located in Rapid City and shared some of Charlie’s story.

“3M came to me in early 80’s. They were getting out of outdoor advertising and asked if I was interested. Indeed, I was but had my hands full running Rosenbaum’s Sign and outdoor advertising plants, thus I asked brother Charles if he wanted to change occupation, move back home, which he did, “together” we with some help financially from our father and myself we bought the highway boards from 3M, Chuck and son Chris, worked hard and in 1998 sold plant to Lamar outdoor, as well as did Rosenbaum signs and outdoor sell our billboard structures.”

In his obituary, the family shared that Charlie was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world — something he often mentioned. He was forever proud of his family and always tried his best to support them.
