Haleigh Powell on Working for an Independent Out of Home Advertising Company

Insider recently talked with Haleigh Powell Director of Client relations at Huntington Outdoor about what it’s like to work for an independent out of home company.

Haleigh what’s it like working for an independent out of home company.

I work with my family in the OOH industry. Combining passion and purpose, working in the billboard advertising industry is fast-paced AND provides the outlet for me to help businesses grow every day!

As the Director of Client Relations at Huntington Outdoor, I work with hundreds of small business owners throughout the state of Ohio and Eastern-Central Indiana. My job is different every day because all the businesses I work with are in various industries and expecting different outcomes from their ads. I usually work with the husband/wife combo who started their business decades ago. I enjoy working with owners because they know every single aspect of their industry like the back of their hand. For all those in the OOH industry, isn’t it amazing that we are able to play a part in economic growth, cultural impact, and information sharing through billboard advertising?

How’d you become director of client relations?

Working with your family comes with many challenges and unique opportunities. I started working with Huntington part-time as an administrator, this was a great way for me to see how the company worked. After college, I stayed on at Huntington, I moved from administration to sales and then to client relations. I noticed very quickly that everyone at Huntington had a very specific skill and I started to look for ways I could contribute. I asked myself, “what skills do I have to contribute to Huntington?” Slowly, the answer dawned on me, I would become the director of client relations and do whatever it takes to make working with Huntington Outdoor a pleasure. The lesson I learned and I am still learning is to start where you are, use what you have, and do what you can to make a difference.

On the prospects for out of home

It is an exciting time to work in the OOH industry. With the majority of traditional media outlets rapidly decreasing profit share, the OOH industry is beating this trend. “Since 1991, revenues have quadrupled to more than $8 billion annually with expanding formats and audiences, and the industry has entered a time of legislative stability. OOH has attained 37 consecutive quarters of revenue growth since the recession while all other traditional media has declined.” – Nancy Fletcher OAAA President and CEO
