[CHARLOTTE, NC] – Gvest Capital, a Charlotte-based real estate firm, has completed its multi-faceted Ervin Complex in Charlotte. The project erected the largest OOH digital spectaculars in the Carolinas and restored the historic eight-story Ervin Building.
After falling into disrepair following the 2008 recession, many thought the Ervin Building was fated for demolition. Gvest Capital, with the grassroots support of Charlotte’s East Side communities, pioneered a solution that not only pays homage to the building’s storied past but also generates sustainable revenue to safeguard its future.
The project began in 2018 with Gvest’s efforts to designate the Ervin high-rise as a federal, state, and local historic landmark. The undertaking would require a multi-year remediation that stripped the building to its core to be rebuilt from the inside out. The massive costs — which nearly doubled through the Covid pandemic — warranted Charlotte’s approval of two state-of-the-art digital billboards that made the Ervin restoration economically viable. The LED panels, which Gvest hired Formetco Digital to construct, are now available for leasing via Gvest’s media operator, Awedience Media.
Each floor of the Ervin Building has been rebuilt into modern office spaces that will be available for leasing to the public via Regus Workspace Solutions. Gvest Capital has reserved the top floor for its new headquarters.
Above the office space, a new 360 degree glass penthouse was built as a future rooftop bar and restaurant. This space is now available for potential tenant. Charlotte’s patrons can enjoy panoramic views of the city skyline. A memorial of Charles Ervin can be seen in the lobby, highlighting the life of Mr. Ervin, and a 200 foot mural can be found along the retaining wall of the Ervin building’s parking lot.
The project is a testament to the impact of public-private partnerships on cultural preservation and economic development. As this project takes shape, it serves as an inspiration to other communities seeking innovative solutions to uphold their heritage and build vibrant futures. Moreover, the project injected life into the surrounding area, as new development has sprung up in the immediate vicinity.
