The Gallatin, Tennessee county council approved an amendment to the city’s sign regulations on Tuesday May 17 according the The Tennessean. the changed will remove a decade long ban on new digital signs and billboards. The rule changes include the following.
- Billboards are permitted only along state roadways and must have a State permit.
- Existing static boards may be converted to digital but 3 static boards must be removed for every digital conversion.
- The number of permitted non-conforming billboards in Gallatin will be limited to the boards permitted at May 2016.
- Digital billboards must be 2,000 feet from any other billboard.
- No new double-stacked boards are permitted.
You can read a copy of the proposed billboard ordinance in the minutes to the may 17 City Council Agenda. A second vote is expected on Tuesday may 7.
Insider’s take: a 3:1 static to digital conversion ratio is OK but one of our readers points out that a 2,000 foot setback between a digital sign and any other billboard is very strict and will discourage the development of digital billboards.
