The Gallatin Tennessee Planning commission approved new digital and billboard regulations by a vote of 6-1 according to The Tennessean. The rules must now be approved by the Gallatin City Council. The rule changes include the following:
- Billboards are permitted only along state roadways and must have a State permit.
- Existing static boards may be converted to digital but 3 static boards must be removed for every digital conversion.
- The number of permitted non-conforming billboards in Gallatin will be limited to the boards permitted at May 2016.
- Digital billboards must be 2,000 feet from any other billboard.
- No new double-stacked boards are permitted.
The April 25th agenda of the Planning Commission contains a draft of the rules together with a staff report. The commission voted against a rule to limit the number of digital sign message changes to no more than 1 per hour.
Insider’s take: A 3:1 takedown ratio for digital conversions is OK. Glad to see the defeat of a proposal to limit digital message changes to once an hour was defeated. What’s the use of a digital sign if you can only change the sign face once per hour?
