Franklin Outdoor’s Dan Franklin tells Billboard Insider there’s still a place for i-beams in a monopole world: “I saw your article on the Lindmark I-Beam build and it made me think of this build that we just did in Albany Minnesota. The site was very tight with setbacks and we had to go around the building.”
With the height restriction we couldn’t do a flag over the building either. Add in the large V and it made more sense for us to fabricate this one in the field around the building. We still build one or two I-Beam signs a year as well. They can be cheaper for us to build and in more rural areas where we are competing against wooden signs, they look way nicer than what’s in the area!
We started building in in beginning of December and finished the end of January. Luckily we didn’t have much snow this year so we didn’t have to deal with that, there are some years we have to plow a lot of snow to get to a build site. The frozen ground makes it take a little longer to drill through but not too much. The positive side is that trucks wont sink into the ground and cause ruts or get stuck. The biggest issue we run into is finding a concrete yard that’s open and will deliver in the winter. When it gets below freezing they all shut down because no one is pouring much with the ground frozen!
