Football + Billboards = Touchdown

Rutgers is using billboards to kick off the 150th anniversary of the first college game (Rutgers versus Princeton on November 6, 1869).

To generate buzz about college football — and Rutgers — these “Birthplace of College Football” billboards appear in markets hosting college bowl games:

  • Dallas (Cotton Bowl)
  • Miami (Orange Bowl)
  • Santa Clara (national championship game)

Rutgers’ marketing tactic highlights the longstanding bond between sports and billboards.

When University of Alabama recently signed a quarterback, it shared the news on billboards.  ESPN’s Alex Scarborough was impressed, telling thousands of Twitter followers that ‘Bama football is “serious about keeping the locals informed.”

Conference rival Louisiana State University also has welcomed new football recruits via billboards.

Insider recalls that 2017 ended and 2018 began with billboards touting the Philadelphia Eagles — and quarterback Nick Foles — in the Super Bowl: “From Wentz we came, in Foles we trust.”

Before the big game, Barbara Bridge of OUTFRONT Media presented an Eagles t-shirt to US Senator Bob Casey (D-PA).  Days later, the Eagles beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.
