Emarketer Podcast on Autonomous Cars

Marcus Johnson and Ezra Palmer did an Emarketer Podcast titled Autonomous Vehicles: How far down the road are we?   Here are some of the highlights from their conversation.

Marcus Johnson on how fast cars will go driverless

The amount of investment makes it seems inevitable that there will be driverless cars…but driverless cars are a long way from reality…The more I read about this topic the further away the deployment of driverless cars gets.

Adoption will take a long time because people are holding onto cars longer.

Driverless cars are not going to be on-off.  There will be a gradual rollout…There are 263 million passenger vehicles in the US and many of those cars have no internet connectivity.  In addition the average age of a US car is 11 years and growing.

Hacking is an issue which needs to be dealt with

Hacking is an issue.  Chrysler had to recall 1.4 million Jeep Cherokees in 2015 after one of their cars was hacked…Some developers were able to hack a jeep and rolled it off the edge of a parking lot into a ditch.  They blasted the fan.  They turned the music up insanely loud.  They killed the engine while the car was on the freeway.  They killed the brakes and locked the doors…
