89.3 KPCC reports that a bill to allow digital billboards along freeways in Downtown Los Angeles sports and tourism district has been sent to Governor Jerry Brown for approval.
AB1373 would require billboards to conform to whatever sign ordinance the City Council passes.
The bill would allow digital billboards to go up in an area of Downtown L.A. bounded by the 10 and 110 freeways, and South Figueroa and West 8th streets — a strip that includes familiar landmarks such as The Original Pantry Café, the L.A. Live entertainment complex, and the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The bill’s sponsor, assemblyman Miguel Santiago says that the bill would help the city attract much needed investment a that billboard advertising around LA live has made the area more vibrant.
Insider’s take: Digital signs will help economic development by generating rental income for developers, revenues for outdoor advertising companies, traffic for advertisers and taxes for the city. Hard to understand how this is a detriment to the city.
