Two examples of people in Illinois using billboards in creative ways.
Fox 55 has a story about an Adams Outdoor art director proposing to his girlfriend on a Champaign, IL billboard.
The Chicago Sun Times reports that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is using 28 digital billboards as well as bus shelters and sidewalk information panels to get the word out to Chicagoans about a $20 million property tax rebate. The city has given permission for Interstate Media and JC Decaux to operate 34 digital billboards along city expressways which will generate $155 million for the city over the life of the contract.
Insider’s take: Insider guesses that the City of Chicago is running for free on the digital billboards. It is normal for cities to ask for a certain number of free flips in addition to rent as a condition for permitting a digital billboard on city land.
