How did WC Media get started in the billboard industry?
Around 1996, shortly after college, my business partner/girlfriend and now wife, Danielle Fulgenzi Giacomini, and I came up with a business idea of indoor ads. After a year selling indoor ad space, an advertiser asked if we had any billboards. From then on we were in search of properties to lease. A few months later, we installed our first 14×48 bulletin in Springfield IL. After adding additional bulletins in our home market, we expanded to Interstate locations throughout Northern IL and Eastern Iowa.
The business is family owned. How many family members are involved?
Aside from my wife and I running everyday operations, we have four children that help out. Both of our families live in Springfield and contribute business advice on a regular basis.
Can you provide us with a summary of your plant?
We keep it very simple with low overhead. We have a great team consisting of an office manager, ad sales person, real-estate person and two ad installers. Aside from a few small billboard acquisitions, all of our structures are new steel monopoles, varying in size from 20×60 in the Chicago metropolitan area to 10×20 in rural communities. Our inventory will approach 400 faces by year end.
Do you have or are you considering digital signs?
Yes, we are considering digital signs near Chicago where traffic counts and demands are greater. We have looked at Yesco, Watchfire and Daktronics, all good quality digitals signs. However, we have not committed to one manufacturer. We have been looking at digital signs for a number of years and are getting closer to making this decision.
