Insider caught up with Stuart Stein, the President of Stein Sign Display. Stuart purchased the business on February 4, 2020, which was his father’s 40th year with the business and also his official retirement date. Stein Sign Display is now a 3rd generation family business.

Stuart, last time we talked, Stein Display had around 200 faces including 2 digitals. It’s been almost two years since then. Any updates on your inventory?

We currently have over 230 static boards, 6 digitals, and 6 interior monitors In 2014, when I started full time with the company, we had 115 static faces and 1 digital. Our company continues to be in a growth mode by acquiring existing boards and securing new locations.

You also have a significant sign installation business. Has that business been a strong compliment to your billboard operations? If so, in what ways?

Sign installation continues to be a major competitive advantage for our company within our 200 mile region. Our backlog is as full as it has ever been and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. In 2014, we had 1 installer. Today we have 3 and looking to add a fourth person to our crew. Currently we are about 10 weeks out on our installation schedule.

Any issues with lead times on obtaining product for installs? Have you seen pricing increases in this current inflationary environment?

The only lead time issues we have are associated with the lead time of the LED Manufacturer or our own current backlog of projects. We haven’t seen anything significant with LED displays; however, there were some steel increases a while back. Even those increases seem to have plateaued.

What goals does the business have for 2023?

We recently hired Morgan Johnson (1/16/23) who will serve as our Director of Advertising & Marketing. Our goal is to continue to drive our OOH growth through what we’ve been doing, but we also have some other strategies in the works. The trajectory for Stein Sign Display continues to elevate and we are excited to see how Morgan, Jason Crow (General Manager) and Sig Sivertson (Static Billboard Manager) and our team can take us to another level.
