Steel City Billboards is a family-owned firm which operates a four structure billboard plant with 13 faces in communities around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  The company is a member of the OAAA.  Insider talked with Mitch Fowkes about the company.

Mitch, how did Steel City get into the billboard business?
That’s a funny thing. My Dad and older brother have a successful online business and when I graduated from college I wanted to work with them. However, I wanted to generate leads a little differently than they did, I wanted to use billboards. I called one of the local billboard companies and asked them what their rates were and when they told me I said is that for a year. They replied, “no that’s for a month”. Well, I got off the phone and told my Dad, “we need to start our own billboard business”. So, in May of 2011 we started Steel City Billboards. Our main mission is to provide affordable outdoor advertising services for small to mid-sized businesses.
Who does what at the company?
As you know we are a family owned and operated outdoor advertising company so we wear many different hats.  My Dad and I do some of the design work and hang all the ads.  My Mom and I doe the sales while my Dad does the accounting.  And we all work on finding new locations.  In fact, my sister found the location where we currently have a double-sided trivision!
Tell us about your plant.
Our billboards are located in both the north and south hills of Pittsburgh, ranging from two Jr. posters and two standard size posters. Our two junior boards are both double sided statics which are illuminated nightly. We felt that it was necessary to provide our clients with illumination no matter what size billboard their advertising on. Our first steel structure, a 10×20 tri-vision was constructed in August 2014. This is a single faced board in what I call Pittsburgh’s top 10 advertising locations in a town called Mt. Lebanon. The reason for our high rating on this billboard is because it’s the only billboard thats within 5 miles in both directions of highway and come August we will be upgrading it to a digital. Our latest billboard was constructed December 2015, this 10×24 double sided tri-vision is located just five miles from downtown on a heavily traveled roadway in Pittsburgh’s north hills. Another great location that keeps us and our clients very busy.
What are some keys to success when you compete against larger billboard companies?
We know that we aren’t in any position to really compete against any company strictly due to how small we are. What we do is keep our head down and move forward by providing great billboard locations and offering great family customer service. We know we can’t put our clients all over the map however we can put them in specific high traffic areas to get them the exposure that their looking for.
Your website says you’re working on a digital sign.  Any updates?
We purchased our first digital a few weeks ago from Formetco. The digital will be up and running August 21st. We have a few more billboards coming late fall & early spring, some of which will be digital.
