Saben Outdoor is a small, family-owned firm that owns static and digital billboards in the Atlanta area.  Many of the billboards are along I-85 south of Atlanta and I-20 west of Atlanta.  The company also provides management services for billboards.  Saben is an operator associate in the IBOUSA.  Mark Shugart is the firm’s President.  Billboard Insider talked with Jen Mehan, the company’s operations manager.

How did you enter the out of home business?

Our business is family-owned, and has been in operation for 60 years. Mark’s grandfather started the first billboard, and we have been steadily working on growth ever since. We are particularly fortunate to be able to live in the community where we work, and to use our marketing to highlight local businesses, organizations, and events that support our community.

What’s new over the past year?
  • We’ve implemented a flex digital package that allows our clients to buy in at lower than ever, and we rotate them periodically across our different digital boards. This is excellent for clients new to advertising, and for clients who want to maximize their coverage in different locations. It has been wonderful for maximizing our occupancy.
  • We have four new static faces on board in the South Atlanta region, with more coming soon!
  • We’ve seen a recent push for extensions, and have many more clients experimenting with making their boards stand out!
  • We have made a major tech push internally. We have integrated with Geopath and IBO’s PerView metrics for industry-recognized and monthly updated impressions. We launched our programmatic platforms with Vistar and Place Exchange. We also onboarded Billboard Planet’s Quantum software.

What are some of your objectives for the coming year?

  • Expand our inventory.
  • Continue supporting our local community with city advertising, emergency messages, and advertising for non profits.
  • Increase our client engagement with digital opportunities, especially the opportunity to vary artwork. We have a few clients who update their artwork weekly, and they have a higher client interactions with their ads.

Whose digital billboards do you use and what have you learned?

We have digital billboards through Formetco; we have been very happy with their support and knowledge to help us grow our business. Our favorite thing about the digital billboards is the room for creative and flexible advertising — we really love for people to push the envelope and to change their artwork frequently.
