Rock City Media is a family owned and operated outdoor company which operates a billboard plant in Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Counties in New York. Insider talked with CEO Doug Barthel.
Doug, tell us a little about the history of Rock City Media?
I head up the team as President and CEO of Rock City Media. I have over 20 years of experience in the outdoor advertising industry beginning as a sales associate for Eller Media in 1995 and climbed the ranks to become Sales Manager of Clear Channel Outdoor in 2004. In 2005, we set off on our own and established Rock City Media with three billboards. In 2008, Rock City Media acquired Midport Outdoor and added 86 additional billboards. In 2012 Rock City built the first Digital in Orange County and now has five. The list continues to grow.
Can you provide us with a summary of your plant?
Rock City Media has locations all across Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Counties with the largest amount in Orange County. The plant breaks down to the following: 5 Digital Bulletins, 40 Static Bulletins, and 101 Posters.
Who is the manufacturer of your digital signs and how have they performed for you?
We have 5 Watchfire 14×48 units in place and have been very happy with the performance and service.
What’s Woodstock like as a base of operation? Still the same as it was back in its rock and roll heyday?
In many ways, Woodstock has remained a time capsule of the sixties. It is a laid back community, where anyone in a suit and tie is more conspicuous than someone in a tie dye. The music scene remains alive and well, with weekly Midnight Ramble performances at Levon Helm Studios (the former Band lead singer and drummer is buried at Woodstock Cemetery) and Bearsville Studios (created by the late Albert Grossman, manager of Joan Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and the Band). Having our base of operation here allows us to take a lunch break with our three dogs, Brian, Shep and Max and still have time to check in on our partner company, Lotus Fine Art and Design, for a coffee break in the afternoon. It has allowed us to take advantage of our beautiful surroundings while also giving us the time to put in a good day’s work with a short, five minute commute from home.
You have an interesting partner business in your building? Can you tell us about it and maybe share a picture?
Lotus Fine Art and Design, Inc. is our partner company and is located on the first floor of the Rock City Media Building. It is an upscale gallery/boutique and framing gallery, with a focus on local and regional paintings, jewelry and gifts. Most importantly, it is the showroom for my wife Jamie’s line of original reverse hand painted chandeliers and lamps, which are also represented in a dozen or so galleries across the United States.
