New South Outdoor operates a billboard plant in North Alabama.   Insider talked with New South’s owner Neil Bell.

Neil, how did you get into the out of home advertising business?

I started right out of college with Lamar in Tallahassee as a sales person and then sales manager. I was immediately in love with the industry. I wanted to run my own plant. At 24 years old and having worked there all of two years, I realized it would a long time before they let me run one of theirs – so a fellow Lamar employee and I left to start our own plant. Now, after 19 years and four plants, I still love the business.  I can’t imagine doing anything else.

You acquired billboards in Oxford/Anniston, Alabama and Huntsville, Alabama during 2019.  How has the integration gone.
Well, the timing wasn’t great but I closed on about 11 digital units in late February just weeks before the shutdowns. Because of that we were a little shaky for a few months there, but we have bounced back pretty well. We picked up a handful of permits from a developer and added some great inventory organically. While a lot of business was shut down, we were ramping up and were ready when shutdowns ended.
Tell us about your plant.

New South will has been operation since April 2016. We sold off 13 digitals and 20 statics in Auburn/Opelika last October. We retained 5 digitals in the Huntsville/Decatur, AL markets. Since February of this year, we have been adding quite a bit of inventory in North Alabama. New South is now made up of 24 digitals and 20 statics. I have alread ordered another 4 digital faces in to be delivered in the next 45 days and I have at least 49 static faces and 3 more digitals in the que. I have an amazing staff of folks who really seem to love outdoor. If they continue to keep things rented and keep our customers happy, I will continue to grow our inventory.

You’ve got drone footage of your digital signs on your website.

I bought a drone. I had a local guy who was going to do a one time shoot for $1200. I did some research and found a great drone for under $1000. Now I can shoot my boards whenever I want. It is a great marketing and POP tool that I would recommend every outdoor operator look into getting.
(Also -I’m happy to report it has other uses… It tells you elevation so I have used it to figure the right HAGL on a couple sites that were taller than my stick.)
How has covid impacted your business?
There were a handful of customers who wanted to cancel or pause their campaign pretty early on, but suprisingly we ended up replacing most of the business during the same period. I was thankful to at least stay flat during the initial downturn.  But honestly, the last three months have been amazing. If you would have told me in May that we would be where we are today, I wouldn’t have believed you.  I have a theory about why we have done better than expected in the last few months though. Much of our inventory is located in smaller markets. I believe that there are many businesses in these smaller towns that previously generated new business by networking and getting out in the community. With many events canceled and social distancing rules in effect, they have had to find other ways to generate leads and business. We have become a great new tool to reach their best potential customers in those local communities.
