Marquee Media operates high profile digital billboards in California.  Insider talked with Marquee’s President Jeff Joaquin

Jeff Joaquin, Marquee Media

How did you get into the out of home advertising business?

I started in the Real Estate department at Foster & Kleiser in 1984 out of college, and thought I’d only stay to build a resume.   Thirty two years later I’m still in the out of home business and have fulfilled a dream I’ve had since Karl Eller bought the company I was working for ( Patrick Media Group ) in 1995 and that was to eventually own my own billboard company. Little did I know then, that it would take me back to where it all started for me, in Sacramento and partnering with the Sacramento Kings.

What’s new since we talked a couple years ago?

We have expanded into the following areas:

  • We have the exclusive rights to the “Banc of California Stadium” home to the MLS LAFC. This exterior digital signage creates a 9 display domination, that includes one full motion display at the main entrance into the Stadium.
  • We went live in April 2020 with the only two 20’x60’ digital displays in the City of Ventura on the 101. These are generally the only available OOH in this entire area and the only off-premise digital displays.
  • We have four additional 20’x60’ 4K resolution digital displays in the Los Angeles market, including the high demand 405 in the Manhattan Beach/South Bay area.
  • At the start of the COVID Pandemic, we went live with the first ever and largest FULL Motion Digital displays in Northern California, located in the Entertainment District in Downtown Sacramento. Ideally situated across the street from the Golden 1 Center, NBA Arena, hotels, restaurants and the California State Capitol, these displays offer a unique opportunity to reach consumers, fans, concerts and government officials. These displays are large 30’x115’ and 30’x30’ wall displays, that rival what someone would see in NY, LA, and Europe.
  • Our total digital display count is over 25 and our traditional count is now 11 bulletins.

What impact has covid had on your business?

  • COVID has impacted us as much as any company in California, especially in the second quarter. We have been very fortunate that our team has stayed very close to all of our clients to adapt and be as flexible as we can during this situation. That has included the flexibility of dayparting ads, roadblocking messages, cancellation flexibility when appropriate, shorter duration programs and creative services to help clients that do not have the capability, or simply need help.
  • Locally and Nationally, in April/May/June, we donated free space to help Pro Bono causes and struggling businesses that needed help to survive.
  • The negative side of COVID is clearly the loss in revenue and seeing our close partner’s businesses close down.
  • The positive side is that we remain very focused on developing assets and are working on ways to improve and adapt our business model to be poised for the next chapter of OOH growth and innovation.
