Insite Mediacom owns and operates over 1600 outdoor advertising faces in Georgia, South Carolina, West Virginia and Maryland.  Insite also operates a network of over 15,000 bus shelters, bench and bus wraps nationwide via Insite Street Media which was formed in 2018 by the merger of Signal Outdoor Advertising and InSite Martin Street Ads. In April 2020 Insite divested 267 billboard faces in Florida and Alabama.  Randall Smith is the CEO of both companies.  Glenn Flutie is President/COO.  Insider talked with Randall Smith.

How did Insite enter the outdoor business?

Glenn is a 3rd generation outdoor advertising company veteran with 35 years in the business himself. Randy and his group were investment bankers in media telecom starting in the 80’s and were pioneers in the telecom tower business converting to a concentration in OOH assets in 2000 when InSite got started. We think that a convergence of the communication business and outdoor advertising assets is inevitable.

How have you been managing through covid-19?

It has been very challenging due to the unprecedented nature of the events, especially the complete shut down of many businesses.  However, we are seeing a renewed confidence from advertisers as they begin to realize that the virus itself is not as deadly has first feared and that shut down orders are being phased out.

You’ve got a partnership with Diamond Communications to develop wireless antennas on out of home structures.  What are some of the challenges to doing this?

We have two different businesses and it is a challenge to convert our “real estate” into a full fledged communications site.  But as wireless continues to expand, we see a need for wireless sites continuing to grow.

Whose digital signs do you own and what have you learned?

We have units primarily from Daktronics and Formetco. Quality has improved dramatically and operating costs, primarily electricity, have fallen significantly. We are looking to convert existing static boards to digitals where workable.  As digital becomes more mature with purchase prices and operating costs continuing to improve, the digital future continues to look bright.
