HB Outdoor operates forty-two faces in Georgia including a double sided trivision and double sided static in Winder, two-sided digital billboards in Buford and a double sided static billboard in Norcross. The company is run by Billy Harvin.
Billy, how did you enter the outdoor business?
My background is shopping center development, and my brother introduced me to the outdoor business in 2008. I did my first digital board in front of one of our existing shopping centers in 2008. I have enjoyed the outdoor business meeting the many people and local/national businesses and brainstorming advertising strategies and then implementing these advertising strategies. I have found that not too many businesses out there don’t like outdoor. I will continue to grow our inventory and business.
What impact has covid-19 had on your business?
Covid has been a hardship for many businesses, but it has also been a bonding / relationship time. We are listening and helping advertisers and community with messaging on our billboards. We anticipate a high demand for billboards in the upcoming weeks and month to let the public know that their business is open!
Whose digital signs are you using and what have you learned about digital?
Watchfire and Formetco are quality boards, and digital is providing fresh content.
How is selling digital different from selling a static board?
There is a misunderstanding of pricing by general public. Some folks think digital is cheaper and other believe statics are cheaper, but we know location and ability to attract public attention is the value. It is fun to converse with customers about advantage of each and which would be best for their business. Digitals are fun to sell to the fresh content guys who really like to take advantage of the digital schedule flexibility. The digitals allow for quick sales “we can have you up today”, which allows for quick contracts and immediate income. Customers appreciate and like the quickness of digital. Static requires more planning to line end of contracts up with new contracts.
