Gigantic Media was formed by Andy Greenwald and David Sternberg to develop wallscapes and billboards in Cleveland.  Insider talked with Gigantic’s founder Andrew Greenwald.

How did you enter the out of home business?

I have been in the traditional and digital agency business for over 15 years in Cleveland, OH. When the Cleveland Cavs drafted LeBron James, my agency was hired to manage radio and VIP events for NIKE in the Cleveland market. LeBron had two breakout seasons and NIKE needed something “BIG” to celebrate what the NBA fans were witnessing.  I partnered with David Sternberg, the owner of Metro Space Realty, a real estate brokerage firm, to locate a wall in Cleveland to erect a large billboard.  David identified a vacant brick wall facing the “Q” (Quicken Loans Arena) which happened to be the side of Sherwin Williams Headquarter’s office building. We licensed the wall, worked with the City of Cleveland, Sherwin Williams and Nike to create one of the most iconic billboards in NIKE’s history and Gigantic Media, LLC was born.

Tell us about Gigantic Media.

Gigantic Media managed the NIKE project from the beginning thru the NBA Championship season.  Our goal is to locate unique downtown and highway locations in the Cleveland Metropolitan area and provide advertisers over-the-top exposure away from the clutter of multiple board locations.  Gigantic properties are the best location in Cleveland.  The I-271 Digital Billboard is the first pole to go up and we now have 2 new locations in development.  Our goal is to offer advertisers great locations and cover the majority of highway traffic in the Cleveland market.

How were you able to get something permitted in Cleveland’s no billboard zone?

We secured a highly visible site located in the busiest section of I-271 in Warrensville Heights, Ohio. This site qualified as a billboard location but sat dormant until  we uncovered it.  Our North and South facing digital Billboards are in the heart of the busy east suburban office district which includes Eaton Corporation’s US Headquarters, University Hospital and Hotels.  Also, one exit north is Pinecrest, a new 250 million dollar mixed use development under construction. Tenants include, Whole Foods store , REI, and other high end retailers plus office and apartments buildings. We worked diligently with the City of Warrensville Heights and the Ohio Department of Transportation from planning thru development. The process took approximately two years.

Whose digital billboard are you using and why?

Formetco.  We liked the technology/resolution of the digital board, plus the back scheduling software is easy to use and very flexible to allow us to maximize revenue.
