Bulletin Displays is one of the top five freeway billboard operators in the Los Angeles area with over 135 bulletin display faces including 34 digital display faces. The firm has both static and digital billboards. 90% of the plant is along freeways. Billboard Insider talked with President Mark Kudler, who is the third generation of the family to run the business.
What’s new over the past year?
Landmark message centers. I’ve always wanted to do an article about our Landmark Message Centers. For years billboards have been criticized as ugly. I’ve designed aesthetically pleasing signs which incorporate important architectural features of each city. Here’s the plan for our Adelanto Landmark Message Center.

- City of Santa Fe Springs (5 Fwy) mimic their city logo
- City of Lynwood (105 Fwy)
- City of Baldwin Park (10 Fwy)
- City of Adelanto (395 Fwy in Adelanto Stadium)
- City of Buena Park (5 Fwy)
- City of La Puente (Valley Blvd in San Gabriel Valley)
- City of Covina (10 Fwy)
- City of Azusa (210 Fwy). You can see the design of the Azusa Message Center below.
- City of El Monte (10 Fwy – 9660 Flair Dr)
- City of La Mirada (5 Fwy built with an anodized car wrap over aluminum).

After I designed the Azuza landmark message center, I wondered how to get a service person up to the digital. Sometimes innovation spurs, more innovation. I worked with two talented engineers – Dr. Lee and John Weaver – of RMG to hide the ladder between the Azuza cabinets. We had to custom design the main connection to the diagonal structures below the digital display. The sign pays homage to the 40 foot tall Spanish influence obelisk that sat in a turnabout in the middle of Route 66 and Azuza Boulevard. I used to turn out since street lights were not in use in this location. It was a World War I memorial with three heroes from the city of Azusa. They currently have their heroes on a 4′ x 8′ piece of plywood. We will build and find a patio at the base of this sign that puts their heroes on bronze plaques similar to the original 1920s obelisk. The design is a huge hit in the city and we are deeply honored to help. Kudos to all the agencies and clients that use Bulletin Displays since they provide the funds to make this project happen.
Whose digital signs are you using and what have you learned?
We use Watchfire Digital’s due to their incredible colors, reliability, and sport network. They have a combination of great digital and a team of programmers. We have our own operating system and programmers. Our programmer also designed a custom CRM for our sales department. If a client can think of a creative dynamic content for digital campaign, then our programmers write it. We enjoy “creative outdoor advertising” since that is our official tagline.
What are some of your objectives for the coming year?
To help our clients with innovative bulletins and special effects. We believe we can continue to do that with our talented and responsive sales department. We will develop more Landmark Message Centers and Blueline Bulletins. Tomorrow we will discuss what BlueLine Bulletins are and how we use them.
