Joe and Jenifer Mancuso

Bella Outdoor was started in 2007 by Joe and Jenifer Mancuso.  The company operates a billboard plant  around Billings in Yellowstone, Carbon and Stillwater counties.     The company was the subject of a 2009 Billings Gazette Profile and a 2016 KULR News article on digital billboards in Montana.  George J Beaudet Jr is the firm’s national sales manager.  Insider talked with Joe Mancuso.

Joe, how did you enter the out of home business?

I got into the outdoor business over 20 years ago with Obie media.  I started Bella Outdoor almost 10 years ago.

Whose digital billboard do you use and what have you learned.

Digital and static billboards are both excellent ways for clients to get their message across.  I use Watchfire…They are an outstanding organization and provide great service.  The addition of Blip to our digital has started to payoff.  The Blip program has added revenue and clients from a national level that a small business cannot access.

What’s it like working in cold weather?

Outdoor labor in the winter presents challenges.  For one thing productivity goes down as the temperature drops.  Bulky clothing, gloves and boots make you slower and less deft.  Changing vinyl’s in Montana winter weather can be challenging.   At  -5 below zero  a vinyl will  crack along the folds and joints  instead of  unfold in just splits into  squares.  At -25 below it just shatters.  At those temps it is dangerous to be outside and it is very hard on equipment.  We tell our customers we will have you installed as soon as weather permits us to effectively  work outside .

What are your priorities for next year?

We are racing to build new strucures before the end of the year.  Our discussions with landowners bogged down and then the permitting process took us from the 2nd quarter to the late 4th quarter.
