Becker Boards is the largest privately held billboard company in Phoenix.  It was founded by Mark Becker, a former real estate lawyer and developer and entrepreneur Joseph White.  The company has 475 total faces including 146 digital faces in California, Nevada, Illinois, Michigan and Florida. In June 2023 Becker and OUTFRONT Foster Interstate won the right to install 10 new double sided digital billboards in Oakland to replace 50 existing advertising signs in Oakland with 10 new double sided digital billboards.  Billboard Insider talked with President Todd Scanlin.

What’s new at the company over the past year?

Over the last year we have focused a lot of our time and resources into digital conversions and ground up development on new billboard locations.  Our creativity identifying new billboard sites in addition to navigating the permitting process, has allowed us to continue our rapid growth in our existing markets.

What are some of your objectives for the coming year?

One main objective this year is client relationships with both existing accounts and new ones.  We want to continue to develop client relationships by offering unique programs and pricing to help build stronger campaigns to increase awareness and ROI.

Todd, how did you enter the out of home business in 2007?

Back in 2007, I was working for Enterprise Rent A Car, washing cars in the middle of summer.  A friend approached me about an open position at Clear Channel in which I knew nothing about OOH.  At that time, I would have taken any job but glad I fell into OOH!

You’ve been in sales for much of your career.  What out of home sale are you the proudest of?

There are so many sales I am proud of, ones that I was involved directly with as the AE or now ones where I am helping my sales time, however, back in 2009, I was able to convince Dr Pepper to utilize digital OOH in Phoenix rather than posters.  This sale, although my biggest one yet as far as revenue, gave me the confidence to work with larger brands.
