Becker Boards is the largest privately held billboard company in Phoenix.  It was founded by Mark Becker, a former real estate lawyer and developer and entrepreneur Joseph White. The company has over 400 faces in Arizona, California, Florida and Nevada. Todd Scanlin is the firm’s national sales director. 

Becker boards owns 550,000 common units of Landmark Infrastructure partners (investment value of $8.9 million as of August 24, 2021) and Mark Becker has encouraged Landmark to sell its assets.  

In October 2019 Becker bought Pearl Media’s Miami wallscapes.  In July 2019 Becker purchased 9 Phoenix/Sun City billboard structures in Arizona from Relay Outdoor Assets 

Mark, how did you enter the out of home advertising business?

I backed into it as a landlord to OutFront on a commercial building that I owned on I-10 in Phoenix.

How are the California, Arizona and Florida markets different?

There are a lot of similarities except California has some unique hurdles associated with its ban against freeway billboards on “landscaped freeways” and murals in Miami can be operated only by those who own or more of the 45 mural permits that the city has issued.

What are the challenges of operating a billboard company in an extremely, sunny hot climate like Phoenix.

The challenges come from the municipalities and defense played by our large corporate competitors.  The sunny weather is great and we haven’t had any issues with our digital displays due to the heat.

Who’s digital billboards do you use and what have you learned?

We use both Watchfire and Samsung/Prisimview. Both have been great.
